Over 20,000 people get affected by lightning all over the world and several thousand die due to lightning strike every year.The population density, literacy rate and urbanization of the region along with lightning density and orography of the area play a major role in number of lightning deaths in the region. In india every year more than 2000 people die due to lightning. The maharashtra records highest deaths due to lightning in india.Specifically, Marathwada and vidarbha region of maharashtra show highest deaths due to lightning in india. Lightning is also one of the leading causes of electric power breakdowns and forest fires. It can also cause damages to communication and computer equipment and aircraft.

Most parts of india experiances the thunderstorm activity some or the other time of year. Climatology of thunderstorms over indian region shows that during pre-mansoon months thunderstorm activity is maximum over south india and decreases towords the north whereas during mansoon thunderstorm activity is maximum over north india and decreases towords south. Climatology of thunderstorm over indian region studied by Tyagi(2007) using 30 year IMD data (1950-1980) show that annual thunderstorm frequency more that 80 thunderstorm days per year occurs over north eastern part of india, some part of kerala and some part of jammu-kashmir.

Educational programs addressing the dangers of lightning are necessary aspects of mitigation.These programs should particularly target the ruler areas, where people work on often fields. While no location is completely safe, large, enclosed buildings or enclosed metal vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, vans and fully enclosed farm vehicles are good choices for shelter. It are often downloaded from the Google Play Store to any smart phone. After downloading the app, it traces your location through Google. If the lightning goes on within a radius of 40 kilometers or if the lightning is close to fall, then this app will tell you.
