The Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) is the state-level flagship organization that works to increase the prevalence of quality education in primary schools. Before the year 1988, it was known as 'State Institute of Education'. It was converted into SCERT in 1988 as per the resolution of the Education Department in the state. This SCERT which is now GCERT. It is a state level fully structured educational institution and is controlled by a Management Committee and an Executive Committee.
In 1997, GCERT was shifted from Ahmedabad to the capital Gandhinagar. The State Education Department has allotted separate land in Sector-12 for GCERT. Hence from 21st August 2005 GCERT is functioning in the newly constructed building Vidya Bhavan in Sector-12. Where innovative infrastructure and advanced equipment are available.
There are now 30 DIET District Education and Training Bhavans (District Institutes of Education and Training) functioning in 33 districts under the umbrella of GCERT. These institutes provide pre-service and in-service training to primary teachers of the state. These institutions have seven branches. Such as Pre-Service Teacher Education (PSTE), Work Experience (WE), District Resource Unit (DRU), Curriculum Material Development and Evaluation (CMDE), Educational Technology (ET) in Service Field Interaction Innovation Coordination (IFIC) and Planning and Management (PM). The DIET consists of qualified and experienced academic and administrative staff.

GCERT is the main body for implementation of education related policies, programs and research of the state. It provides support and guidance to all teacher education institutions. GCERT works in collaboration with NGOs, subject experts, academics and strives to bring about change in the interval districts of the state. Disseminates current trends and information on primary education, pre-service and in-service education, progress in education in the country, methods of education. Widespread use of distance education as a medium of training targeting new subjects, conducting social awareness programs and improving primary education curriculum. The Council is committed to improving the quality of school education. It strives to find appropriate solutions to educational challenges in the areas of curriculum development, learning materials and assessment methods, particularly in the field of primary education.
GCERT has creatively taken a unique journey from Chowk to Satellite and has taken on tough challenges in the field of educational reform.
